Federer, Nadal reach third round in rainy Hamburg

Tennis Betting Lines

05/16/2007 - Hamburg, Germany (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Top-seeded and three-time titlist Roger Federer was tested in the second round, while clay-court wizard Rafael Nadal advanced easily at the Masters Series Hamburg tennis event. Rain forced the suspension or postponement of six second-round matches here on Day 3.

Playing under the canvas roof on center court at Rothenbaum, the world No. 1 Federer snuck past Argentine qualifier Juan Monaco 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to reach the third round on the red clay here. The Swiss great was the back-to-back Hamburg titlist in 2004 and 2005 and also titled here in 2002.

"It was a tough first match," Federer said after edging out a game Monaco in just under two hours. "Obviously he's a good clay-court player. I am glad I came through."

The 10-time Grand Slam champion Federer has struggled a bit in recent weeks, as he's seeking his first title in five tournaments.

Federer's third-round opponent on Thursday will be 15th-seeded Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, who edged unseeded Russian Marat Safin 6-3, 7-6, after a second-set tiebreak 17-15. Ferrero was the runner-up here in 2001.

Both Ferrero and Safin have won Grand Slam titles and are former No. 1s.

A second-seeded Nadal, meanwhile, extended his unstoppable clay-court winning streak to 78 straight matches with a 7-5, 6-1 handling of qualifier and fellow Spaniard Oscar Hernandez. Nadal is fresh off his title last week in Rome and is the reigning two-time French Open champ.

Nadal is seeking his fourth title in four clay-court events so far this year. He's already captured three Masters Series events in 2007, including two on his beloved clay.

Up next for the amazing Nadal is Russian Igor Andreev, the last man to beat the Spaniard on clay, two years ago in Valencia.

Eighth-seeded American James Blake eased into the round of 16 by dousing veteran Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-2, 6-3. Up next for Blake will be former world No. 1 Spaniard Carlos Moya.

An upset came when Moya took out 10th-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Moya, unseeded this week, captured Roland Garros back in 1998.

Another former No. 1, 16th-seeded Aussie Lleyton Hewitt, reached the third round by besting Argentine slugger Juan Ignacio Chela 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

In other second-round play, the aforementioned Andreev overcame wild card and German crowd favorite Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-4.

Third-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko was knotted with Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 1-1 and Argentine Jose Acasuso was ahead of Italian Filippo Volandri 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 2-1 when their matches were suspended until Day 4.

Fourth-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic, fifth-seeded Australian Open runner-up Fernando Gonzalez and 11th-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet all had their second-rounders postponed until Thursday, a day in which they'll also have to play their third-round bouts. The Chilean Gonzalez was last week's Rome runner-up to the streaking Nadal.

Hamburg serves as a tune-up for the French Open, which will commence in less than two weeks in Paris.

Football Betting: Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.

Bet on NFL Football

Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.

Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.

Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.

Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.

All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.

A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
